“I cant put a camera in the public area/modify the outside of the apartment. Is this something you put on the inside of the door facing the peephole? Or is it supposed to take out the existing peephole?”

original peephole has to be removed. comes with tool to do it and easy to install instructions.

Unlike our other Video Doorbells, Ring Peephole Cam is installed directly on your door by replacing the existing peephole, therefore no permanent home alterations are needed. The first thing to check when making sure you can install the Ring Peephole Cam is the dimensions and potential obstructions on the door itself. As a reference, here are the dimensions for our device: Indoors: 2.26 in. x 4.40 in. x 1.16 in (57.4 mm x 112 mm x 29.5 mm) Outdoors: 1.85 in. x 3.83 in. x 0.78 in (47.0 mm x 97.3 mm x 19.8 mm) When checking your door, make sure the area is clear of obstructions such as a mail slot or a doorbell knocker. The Peephole Cam can only be installed on doors that range from ~1.3 in. to ~2.2 in.(34 mm to 55 mm) and have a peephole diameter of 1/2 in. to 9/16 in. (12 mm to 14 mm).
