• As I read this I'm thinking of mounting the shelf independently as your TV ends up after screwing to the wall. Another thought is building the shelf(ves) first with the mount installed directly then screw into the wall.

• No, I didn't see anyway to use the mount to add a shelf to it. I mounted a shelf above the tv using brackets and a piece of 1x8x24 inch piece of pine. Works great.
