• I believe the purpose is to accommodate a device plus that is so wide it could cover more than one outlet, making any covered outlet on the strip unusable.

• This is just for space as some power cables are oddly sized.

• It does not offer “extra” protection just more room for longer or wider power source connections. For example: my router has an unusually large power cable compared to my XBOX X.

• That plug is offset to allow for larger charging blocks/AC adapters. Definitely comes in handy for some models of printers, ext HDs and other equipment.
