The main benefit I see is the speed it takes to move between apps and launch them. On my smart TV it lagged when changing apps and was just annoying. With the Roku it is immediate response when clicking. It made it feel like a solid satellite or cable box interface vs the smart TV one. As far as the apps go, it may have more then your smart tv offers, but does the same essentially. For me worth the extra buy
