• The ethernet cable is the internet connection, only. The HDMI connection is for video and audio, only. You can buy a Roku without the ethernet connection (LAN) for wireless use only but you need the HDMI port or you won't see or hear anything.

• Yes, your Ethernet connection only provides the Internet / network connection to be able to stream videos, you still need to connect to your TV via HDMI in order to use the Roku and watch the videos.

• I'll answer my own question. I found out that you do have to plug into the HDMI port, even with a hard-wired Ethernet connection.
