The Premier plus is just like the Roku 4 was, that is, it just passes the signal through HDMI and does no decoding. So, Netflix, for example is DD+ and the Premier plus will just pass that through and send it to your TV and if your TV can't decode it, you will only hear PCM 2ch sound. If you say you don't have a receiver that can handle DD+, then the Ultra would be for you as that one has an optical audio output and the Ultra converts DD+ signals to DD 5.1 via optical.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can choose whether the sound output is in 5.1 format or plain stereo (2.0 format) in the settings section of the menu. If you don't have a receiver, set it to the stereo format to avoid any weird sound issues from the 5.1 streams. You can switch it back if you later get a 5.1-capable receiver.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I do not know the answer to your question, but your receiver also needs to be new enough to handle HDCP 2.2 via HDMI (the video encryption). Mine was not. I have the premiere plus and I plugged the hdmi directly into the TV and then used an optical audio cable to connect back to my receiver. Works perfectly.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The roku does support 5.1 however only certain apps on it will also support this feature. If both the app and the roku output a 5.1 dolby signal you would still need a receiver to decode the signal.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It can pass Dolby Digital along as a bitstream for your receiver to decode
