do I need this with a smart TV? null

I have mine as an adjunct to my smart tv because of the zillions of available channels through Roku that I can't get on my smart tv (Samsung 4k), also have tv on an antenna. Hope this helps.

Your tv needs to have and hdmi port or ethernet connection. If you don't have either one of these it won't work. If your tv has the composite jacks inputs (usually red, white, and yellow) then I would recommend looking at the roku model express plus. This model has the composite jacks.
