No, you don't need a receiver for Roku, but you do have to have an internet connection (wireless or wired). Mine is running on wireless at this time. You also have to have access to a computer for initialization: part of the setup procedure.

So, no need for Dish Network, but you do have to have internet access. via a router or a hotspot on your phone. (if you do use your phone as a way out to the internet, you will be using your phone's data, so be careful).

BUT, in order to watch most, if not all of the cable based programming such as History, Discovery, TLC etc... You will need a cable/sat subscription to log into those channels. Hulu, Sony Vue and others have those same shows but they may not offer the most current episodes and of course Hulu & Vue have a monthly fee, but much cheaper than any sat/cable subscription.
