Unfortunately you have to subscribe to the spectrum channel to get access to the channels in the spectrum app. So basically you will have the same channels using the app that you have with your cable service. I have comcast/xfinity and that is how it works and I believe it is the same with all cable apps. I guess they have the app so you would not have to have a box for the tv and could use the app instead of a box. And you can use the app on other devices (phone/tablet/laptop, etc).

The Spectrum TV channel is subscription based and would require an account to use the service. All you need to get started streaming is a TV with an HDMI connection and internet service. You can also access tons of free content on the Roku Channel; including Roku Originals, Live TV Guide and over 40,000 Movie and TV episodes.

You can access Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, SlingTV, and a massive list of others. Some are free and some have charges, but personally, I think it's still cheaper than cable.
