There are many channels available via the Roku that do not have a fee associated with the content. Roku doesn't provide access to network TV although you can generally get that fee through the air with a simple antenna such as a Mohu Leaf. Roku is a great vehicle for accessing your Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or other similar accounts.
I would recommend:

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.YOU can download certain network apps, such as NBC,CBS AND ABC, BUT some of the content might cost you money, OR you can only watch the program a week after it has aired.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are some free channels like CW and others that don't require a fee. I really use min as a replacement for cable and directv...so I have sling tv and we have always had Netflix.

The CW gives you free access to some of their shows and typically includes the latest 2-3 episodes, and the NBC app gives you access to a few shows, but FoxNow, CBS All Access and others either require a monthly subscription, or you have to have a cable TV provider in which you log in with your provider credentials. As for movies, again, there are a few free ones, but probably not the ones you are looking for. However, there are channels where you can buy or rent. This link https://channelstore.roku.com/browse/top-free will show you the apps with free access (again limited to the latest episodes...very few full season access without a subscription).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, there are apps (channels, services) that provide free programming... but it will be spotty. I am just now cutting the cord and experimenting with trials. Good thing is that nothing is contract based (unless you sign up for a "deal"). Rates are reasonable. So far, liking Netflix, CBS and Hulu. This combo cover just about everything for me. Combined, they are still a fraction of cable. If you want free programming get an HD antenna (our next addition). But you will be beholding to the schedule because it will all be old fashioned live tv (unless you get a TiVo or something similar). The OnDemand features on the apps simulate the recorded experience, which i need, personally.
