You just plug it in with hdmi but you will need a streaming service to get most of what you want. It comes with a lot of apps but some you will have to pay for. I am using Directtv now app and get almost everything I was paying Dish for and saving $70. A month. As long as you have fairly fast Wi-Fi it’ll work great.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can set up your account right on your tv. You don't need a smart tv, basically this will make it one. You will need a fast router and enough bandwidth from from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), to prevent buffering (stop & go lag time).

You would have to have a router from the cable company if you have wi-fi unless its built into the cable box. In any case, the Roku will not work at all without a constant internet connection.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You’ll need a computer/tablet/smartphone nearby in order to pair certain apps in Roku for initial setup because Roku will display a one-time activation code on the TV for you to enter in that app’s website. For example, pbs.org/activate. You may be able to write down the codes and then head over to the library, go to those sites, and enter the codes. I’m not sure if those codes time out or not. I think for apps like Netflix and Prime you can just input your regular login credentials without a computer/tablet/phone.
