Well worth it
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently cut cable cause of the ever rising prices. I have a much older model of the Roku stick and I was happy with it so I wanted something from Roku to match my 65 inch Sony 4K HDR tv. After much research on streaming devices I purchased the Roku Ultra (4660 model) and I am not disappointed!! This thing is quick and has beautiful picture quality. Setup was a breeze and I was watching 4K tv in less than 10 minutes. I currently stream Netflix, Hulu and Sling. All of them look great.

Great Streaming Device
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought 2 of these Roku Ultra players for my mother. I'm the live in caretaker and last year we cut the cord - got rid of a bundle of cable + net + home phone service to cut the cost in more than half by just going with Net service. Home phone was nearly obsolete and seemed to serve only as a receiver for telemarketers and the cost of cable - for what we watch - made much more sense going with a streaming service (at the moment Hulu Live TV, but thinking about trying YouTube or the DirecTV NOW app). I'm an Apple guy (never thought I'd say that), and on my television I use Apple TV. However, my elderly mother is not tech savvy - I recall back to when we had a VCR, someone always had to do the "be kind, rewind" duty because even the simplest electronics were enough to confuse her. That being said, the AppleTV remote proved quite challenging - the swipes etc were something that proved to a hurdle that kept her too afraid to learn how to use it, so we tried Roku Ultra. I now have a Roku Ultra in the living room, and in her bedroom and she has a much easier time using it than AppleTV. If I am to be honest, the Roku tends to buffer more frequently and experiences skipping / clipping in playback of the Hulu LiveTV app more frequently than the AppleTV does. However, it is ONLY when watching Live TV on that app. This occurs on the AppleTV also, though not as frequently. When watching Hulu programming that is not Live TV, or Netflix, Youtube etc, this device streams seamlessly without issue. I think it's more of a Hulu Live issue than a streaming device issue to be honest. One thing that I did notice is that the Roku devices seem to stream much more data than AppleTV. We were using the AppleTV substantially - my mother being mostly homebound and without much in the way of hobbies, the TV goes on in the morning and barring any doctors' appointments, stays on most all days morning till night. Our data use jumped from around 500-600 gb data / month to in this current billing cycle, we're on pace for roughly 1.2 tb data. For the last couple weeks of last month, I had the AppleTV disconnected and we used one Roku and the data use skyrocketed at the end of the month compared to the first part of the month. That is the only complaint that I can find, but like the AppleTV, I'm looking for workarounds - I know with AppleTV you can turn of auto updating, change the screen saver settings etc. If I'm able to find some way to alter the data use of Roku Ultra, I would then put it on par with AppleTV. In the interim, I would put it just behind the AppleTV, but only because of the huge uptick in data use. For those not tech savvy, or can't seem to get a handle on the gestures / swipes of an AppleTV remote and prefers buttons, this player should more than suffice. If you have data limits, you may want to keep a close eye on data use as you move through your billing period. Great product!

Excellent way to "upgrade" smart TV features
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We have an older Samsung plasma display (PDP) and while it came with streaming apps, Samsung has stopped providing updates for this panel and there are more streaming services we needed access to than the TV provided. We were using a PS3 as a streaming device until it started having problems with its HDMI output. So, the newest generation Roku Ultra was purchased as a replacement. It's been great so far. The remote is very useful. We haven't made use of the private listening feature of the remote yet, though, so I can't speak to that. Nor can I speak to use of the Roku app for mobile devices because we haven't tried that yet. Otherwise, this device has been an excellent purchase.

Q: QuestionI am a complete novice in this field. If I buy the Roku Ultra to use with my Smart Tv, do I need to purchase a stick? Does one need anything else in order for this to function? What would I need in order to use the Roku Ultra with an older television?
Asked by Warhorse.
- A:Answer If you buy the Roku Ultra, you will not need to purchase a stick. However, you will need to have an HDMI cable (or buy a new one) because the Roku Ultra does not come with an HDMI cable included among the contents in the box. As far as what you'll need for the Roku Ultra to function, all that is required is a free (i.e. spare/unused) HDMI port on your TV and an internet connection... although you will need to setup an account on the Roku website, assuming you don't yet have one. If your television is really old, and does not have HDMI connectivity, it would probably be better for you to get an Roku Express+ (Roku Express Plus) which comes with an AV Out cable to connect to older TV's without HDMI ports. That particular model is exclusive to Walmart, though, so you would need to buy it there. At $99.99 the Roku Ultra is a needless expense for older televisions. The Roku Express Plus costs just $39.99 and includes all the cables you would need to connect it to your TV. If I were you, I would go for that and save yourself sixty bucks! ;-) :-)

Q: QuestionIt appears the Roku Ultra is the most expensive option in the Roku line can you tell me advantages of the Ultra over the Roku Stick + that is less expensive. I am not sure why I would want the Ultra over the stick+s
Asked by SuzyQ22.
- A:Answer The stick is suited for shorter range and should work well in most applications assuming you have a decent router/signal. I would guess that if you go out around 50 ft use a standard Roku and if 60ft, use an Ultra. This is my wireless setup. Good Luck

Q: QuestionI have a second tv that is not HD but has a hdmi connection. Will the ultra work with this tv?
Asked by BonnieR.
- A:Answer Yes, the Roku Ultra will work with any tv with an HDMI connection. It doesn't need to be full HD or 4k. The Roku Ultra will work with 720p, 1080p, or 4k tv's. When you set it up for the first time, it auto-detects your display and configures it to work for your TV.
