If you are plugging the Roku directly into the TV and from the TV out to the Onkyo that is likely why you are not getting Dolby Digital. Most televisions down sample to stereo via DTS or Dolby. You might want to check your settings on your television if this is how you have it setup.
If you have it going directly into your receiver make sure the sound settings on your Roku are set to either Auto (selects audio stream for you) or Dolby Digital.

If you use wifi, you will need to enter your wifi password after you select your ssid. Roku itself doesnt cost you anything per month, its the added service that will. I have the wwe network, britbox, amazon prime video and music. There are alot of free services that you can add. There are free movie, tv and other ones.
