The pair of matched microphone capsules are mounted on the front of a heavy body (which helps reject noise from the back). Also, the two signals are compared so that any audio that comes from the sides are slightly out of phase and can be rejected. So, the ability to "cancel noise" pays more attention to the position of the signal than the character of the signal. In this respect, the unit should be more directional than conventional cardioid pattern directional mics. I love mine, but results may vary.
