Yes, there is tons of room, I have 10 file folders with papers in them in mine right now.

I use the core largest compartment for files and a file binder. No issues and I'm a heavy user - I assure you of that along with my HP 17.3" laptop that's not of a modern ultrabook thickness.

The outer pocket holds a couple of standard sized notepads snugly. If your folders didn't fit there, they would definitely fit in the next compartment (the middle one) with extra room.
