I think this might be too underpowered for someone doing coursework or doing a lot of research. Usually, schools have a hardware requirements list somewhere for their students, so a proper computer can be chosen. This would definitely not be able to run any sort of graphics software, for example. This Chromebook is excellent for web-browsing, email, chatting, social media.... but I wouldn't recommend it as a work computer. A bit too slow and underpowered.
