• Yes, that's exactly what I do. I disabled the Icemaker and removed the ice bin. Something to note, the ice making mechanism protrudes into that section of the freezer when the door is closed. So you don't get the full depth of that area.

• Yes! I did turn off the ice maker. That space is free for you to put in anything that fits. Make sure you turn off the ice maker with the panel inside. I recommend the app to setup your refrigerator.
