“The optical cable is not fitting in the sound bar. We are hesitant to force it”

easy killer, make sure the end is okay and make sure the clear protective cap is off of it

You may not have taken the protectors off the end of the optical audio cable. Once these are removed the cables fit easily

Make sure you have removed the plastic safety tip on each end before attempting to plug in

Make sure you take off the little plastic tips on both ends. I made the same mistake myself. You shouldn't have any problems after that.
