“Does this have to be stacked or can it be used as a stand-alone washing machine? This might sound stupid but I know there is some type kit for stackable and not sure without it if it works as not stacked.”

It does not need to be stacked if you have the space for them to be side by side - The stacking kit, SK-DH is very simple to install if u do stack them
