“what type of freon does this unit use ? seems that earlier models had problems (could not be recharged or repaired )”

This refrigerator uses R134A refrigerant.

Check the compressor label on the appliance's rear or the rating label inside the fridge to see which refrigerant is used for your refrigerator.
