Thanks for asking, Lee! In order to use the ice maker and AutoFill water pitcher, you will need to connect a water line to the refrigerator. However, if you do not connect a water line, the rest of the refrigerator features will function as normal. Just be sure to turn off the ice maker in this case to prevent internal damage. ^Jecca

No you don't have to. It took a couple of weeks for my plumber to get out to hook mine up. During that time i just used ice trays. However, you will need water supply to take advantage of the water filter and the water container on the door.
