Hi Michelle, Yes, a water line installation kit will be needed in order to connect the RF26HFENDWW to your home's water supply so it can make ice. If you prefer not to connect it to water, you can turn the ice maker off by pressing the Ice Off button on the control panel. Thanks for your interest, Ms. Samsung

I believe the conflicting information might be from those that are considering the connectors that come with the refrigerator as the "water line/kit". You do need the water line. It is not too expensive and I purchased it and it has worked like a charm.
