The ice and water functions on the RSG257AARS can be used without a filter installed, though it's important to have an external filtration system in place to help prevent mineral deposits and debris from damaging the water lines in the fridge. You can simply remove the filter cartridge; no additional part is necessary. Thanks for the question, Ms. Samsung
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Not from what I read in the instructions. If you use the ice maker/water dispenser, you need to filter the water feed. To make the filter last longer, filter the water before it reaches the ref/freezer unit with an inline supply line filter. If your municipal water is "dirty" and foul tasting due to poor water dept. action, complain to your Board of Health. Potable (drinkable) water is a necessity. If your well water needs improvement, (eg: hard water) add a filter in-line so that all water supply is improved for washing, cooking and watering the lawn. If neither is a reasonable solution, use bottled water. To eliminate the leaking associated with a clogged filter in need of replacement, I installed a small ball-type line shutoff valve in the Laundry/Lav on the other side of the wall for easy access. I don't have to move the reffer/freezer to stop the leak, replacing the filter when I have the time. You may place your valve near the line feed takeoff under the sink for easy access.
