“I just had this fridge delivered. I noticed a thin black cable attached with a screw on the top of the fridge. I wasn't here when it was delivered and I'm ready to remove it but is it part of the packaging or does it have some purpose I don't understand.”

It can be removed. I believe it is just there to hold the cord and could have been removed after delivery.
