“So the manual says with the added rear speakers this only puts out 4.1 surround. If the bar / subwoofer itself is 3.1 I would think the added rears would make it 5.1. The older M550 model puts out 5.1 with the extension speakers.”

If the added speakers are fixed to one channel then the answer is no, but if the added speakers are connected to a left and a right channel then yes it will be 5.1. Bar left,right , and center that’s 3 Rear speakers left and right that’s 2 All indepentant channels that 5 Sub-woofer that’s the .1
