“Can the subwoofer be used laying on its side, or does it need to be up straight? One of the sides has a soft surface, should that side be facing up?”

Hi Leo! The subwoofer is designed to stand upright. If you are laying the subwoofer on its side, ensure the soft side is face up to get the optimal audio experience and avoid damage. ^Tim

My subwoofer is upright (vertical), with the soft, circular side facing out into the living room... it works well and seemed like it should be set up that way.
