Try keeping your freezer part a little cooler. Make sure your door is sealing properly especially around the ice maker. I have the ice in the lower freezer also. It is frozen more solid and is much better for mixed drinks and does not melt near as fast.

It isn't unusual for a small amount of crushed ice to come out when cubed is selected, particularly if crushed ice had been dispensed previously. To help prevent this, dispense a few cubes after crushed ice has been dispensed; this will help to clear any remaining shards of ice from the chute each time. However, if your ice maker is consistently dispensing the wrong type of ice, it's possible there's a buildup of ice at the dispenser opening, preventing the actuator flap from opening or closing appropriately. You can check this by removing the ice bucket, emptying its contents then turning it upside down to examine the dispenser opening. If the flap is frozen in position or if there is a build up of ice preventing it from opening or closing, rinsing it with warm water should help to resolve the issue. Be sure the bucket is completely dry before reinstalling it in the fridge.
