If the screen shows a sound sign, like the sound (a blaring horn image) with an X through it, it means your sound is muted. I don't think the sound sign has anything to do with the signal.
I'm not sure what you mean, "purchase a box for this TV?". I have my TV sitting on the top shelf of a TV/Stereo/Bookcase piece of furniture.
If you mean get a box to put the TV into to return it, in that case, I keep all of my small appliance boxes for exactly that reason. I do flatten them however.
