R-134a and you have to be vigilant about keeping the lint trap and evaporator coil clean. Even though we have done this, it still plugged up. Worked great for about 2 years. Took the top and back off and cleaned all the lint out and it still doesn't operate correctly. Probably has something to do with poor design or quality control on the internal seals. Other than that, it has been good. Energy efficient and gentle on clothes.
