• Pedestal is for a more convenient operating height of each machine when the dryer is not stacked on top of the washer. Pedestals also create storage space below each machine.

• Pedestal not at all necessary. I use it for storage, and it reduces the amount of bending to get clothes in and out, so it's an expensive convenience option, but not necessary.

• Hi PurpleRose, the pedestal is an optional accessory, it does not make the washer function any differently. It does give added storage and extra height for the washer. ^Rosi
