• Yes, there is a pause button. Then you just have to wait for the "locked" light to go off and you can safely open the door.

• Yes, the washer does have a start and pause button that you can use at any time during the cycle. Front load washers don't actually fill with water as much as they use a pressurized spray to wash the clothing, so you don't have to wait forever to add clothing.
