picture is slightly better on non-HD service. There are aspect ratio or picture size settings in the options menu along with options for 720p (sort of mid-range resolution) and an easy test to run to see if your TV will support it . If it does, you may find a "zoom" feature is available that will allow you to change the picture size to fill the TV screen. On my U-verse service, this is found by pressing the options button on the remote control.
