Samsung suggests you need to be "within 5 feet" of the remote for it to work without pressing the mic button. If you have Alexa devices elsewhere in your home, "you can also download the Alexa app on your phone or PC to pair it with SmartThings" (Samsung's smart appliance app). I BELIEVE the hands free refers to the fact that once you are linked to your home network and added to your alexa account you can use an alexa device in your house that IS hands free to control the TV - but not via your remote.
