Yes, this soap opera effect is caused by the 60 fps motion rate feature. It can be adjusted manually to your liking and even turned off.

I too was worried prior to purchasing this model TV but straight away from the box with out having to adjust settings the Black and White films look BETTER, way better than I've viewed before!! I know what your speaking of as this soap opera effect and for me it came set perfect! If you find your B & W looks odd it is only the setting and you will achieve with adjusting setting a marvelous experience! This TV definitely makes what we're used to viewing and adds dimension and soft crispness.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes. There is an option in advanced settings that controls motion. This can be set to OFF greatly reducing any "soap opera" look. It will look like a standard HDTV feed, just clearer because of all the extra pixels.
