I don't know about 9.1, but it's definitely not 5.1, not even 2.1. Forget about virtual surround, you won't even get a two channel stereo. It gives good rich sound which seems to come out of a single speaker. But the speaker itself looks great. Maybe that's what 9.1 stands for. Would not recommend.
