An agitator mechanically beats the clothes around and around in the water. The expeller swishes the water around as the tub slowly rotates in clockwise then counter-clockwise motion, which keeps the clothes moving in the water without beating them to death. I find my clothes come out a lot cleaner in this machine, and feel like they will last longer as well since the washer is gentle on them.

Agitator: An agitator washer has a central spindle with spiral fins that rotate back and forth, agitating the water so clothes rub against each other to remove stains. This design is traditional and widely recognized. Impeller: An impeller washer has a low-profile disk at the bottom that rotates to create water currents, causing clothes to rub together and remove dirt. Impeller machines usually offer a larger capacity than agitator models. Leo
