I think the machine adjusts based on weight and cycles used. On page 27 of the manual, Step 7 Calibration Mode notes the washer detects weight automatically. There are many tips noted about evening out laundry when put in and how to put in blankets, etc. Please note I just got mine yesterday and haven't used it yet (I have to get a hose adapter first) , so I'm answering based on the manual info.
