“One of the reviews mentions the requirement for a "straight down" drain hose. I have a 40 year old home and the current drain pipe is about 6" above the height of my current front load washer on a pedestal. Can anyone confirm? How difficult to adapt?”

You should be ok with your current set up. I had the same set up and when the washer was delivered and hooked up there was no issues or special attachments needed. The drain hose fit right in. It does stick up a little more than your typical J hook hose.
