It will work fine with basic cable, but you will find that using a digital cable box via HDMI will be money well spent if your cable company only provides high definition programming via a box (which many now do or are migrating to as they need the bandwidth to offer more channels and charge a fee for the boxes!). Hopefully your cable company sends a High Definition signal without a digital cable box and the internal QAM tuner in the TV will receive the programming. If your cable company only sends a Standard Definition 480i signal, you will see every flaw in the standard broadcast signal due to it's 1940's technology. Only a few cable companies offer 4K (2160p) programming and the amount of programming content (shows and movies) out there in 4K is few and far between - only in the hundreds compared to millions of shows and movies in SD (480) or even HD (1080).
