“Can overhang be avoided when stacking? Is it definitely true that the dryer is required to overhang the back of the washer by 5" when stacked even though it has a shorter depth than the washer? I've checked the product manual at Samsung's website and all the info I could find about the stacking kit, and nothing else gives a hint about that seemingly major gotcha that throws off all measurement expectations. If it's true, I guess I've got to scrap my order and go back to the drawing board.”

Yes, the 5" overhang for the stacked units is necessary. The brackets in the SK-5A stacking kit are designed so the dryer will sit back due to the convex shape of the front of the washer which is shallower at the top than the bottom. If the back of the units were flush, the bottom front of the dryer would overhang the top front of the washer making it impossible to fully access the controls or open the detergent drawer.
