I'm pretty sure those measurements are for a closed in area such as a small closet with a door that closes because I seem to remember I read somewhere in the owner's manual where they recommend even leaving your door open/cracked when you use the washer/dryer. There's a sensor on the dryer that measures airflow.

Please try again later.Hi CounterInstaller, The 17" clearance is recommended when the Dryer is installed in an enclosed area like an alcove or closet; the 6" clearance is for ease of installation when stacking the Dryer on top of the Washer. Less clearance is fine if there's plenty of air circulation, though I would suggest leaving room between the Dryer and adjacent surfaces to prevents unnecessary noise from vibration occurring.
