I mean you "can", but that doesn't mean you should. Especially if your fireplace gives off a lot of heat. Overtime that will damage the TV, and decrease the life of the TV. If your fireplace has venting in it that mitigates the heat from rising out of it, then I'd say you're ok. You just want to make sure that you don't have any heat rising up and hitting the TV. A good way to test is to have your fireplace going as hot as you can get it, put your arm out touching the wall above it, and if you feel heat... I would advise against mounting the TV above it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.People do hang TV's above the fireplace but it's not a good idea for a few reasons. One of them is possible heat radiating up to the TV. The other bigger issue is height. Generally, the TV is just too high for a good viewing angle. Do you sit in the first couple rows going to the Movie Theater? That's what it's like. Neck strain from the looking up for who knows how long. What I did when I got my TV. I cut out a cardboard templet of the size of the screen. Then held it up in the location the TV would be in and raised it up and down to get the right placement. When sitting down in front of it, you want your eyes to just look straight ahead. Not be looking up or down. Not bending your neck up or down. You can get a good idea where the TV should be mounted that way. If you measure correctly with the mount, you should end up at the right spot.
