No. I bought mine for my ps5 as well. As soon as you install it in the ps5 system and cut it on, it automatically updates the firmware for you so make sure you are connected to the internet. It is definitely worth the money. Especially if you get the two TB version.

You don't have to update it on pc, doing so just allows it to run at its fullest potential. You can connect it to your ps5 as is.

I did to get the max speed out of it, about 6,600 mb/s. Without updating, it barely passed the benchmark of 5,500 mb/s required, but would still work.
