A "2-D movie" is basically just a movie that is not in 3-D. Most movies are in 2-D. If you don't have a 3-D TV, you don't need a 3-D Blu-Ray player. Any Blu-Ray player should work with your Smart TV -- including this one, but if you want to save money, a less expensive one than this could meet your needs just as well as it sounds like you just need something to play blu-ray discs (rather than needing 3D, UHD 4K, or smart features).

And no you do not need a 3D TV to use a 3D blueray player, you just wont be able to use the 3d function which you can only use if you have a 3D blueray disc. Most all blueray discs are "2D' the ones that are 3D also come with a "2D" version

You should probably be more interested in this unit if you have a 4k TV. (Not that there's a whole lot of 4k content i.e. Netflix, a few 4k YouTube videos and Sony 4k movies sold on Amazon)
