The outer drum of this machine is made of an antimicrobial plastic. It’s polyethylene which is durable and chemically stable and it has an antimicrobial material embedded into it. The inner drum is stainless steel with polyethylene fins to agitate the laundry. The outer drum mates with a flexible synthetic rubber boot seal that is treated with the same antimicrobial material as the outer drum. The end result is a highly mildew resistant finished product. The best way to preserve the machine is to use only as much softener and detergent as the machine thinks it needs, so make sure you set the concentration and dosing settings in the app. High quality detergent and softener are also critical, I find my machines have done the best with Persil Professional and Downy Wrinkle Guard. Also, make sure you run the self clean cycle when the machine tells you it’s time and don’t skip. A helpful hint is to use Clorox Bleach crystal packs in the self clean cycle. Unlike liquid bleach, the calcium hypochlorite in the crystal packs has twice the germ killing power of liquid bleach and also the calcium helps break down any residual detergent.
