Chromebooks use Google Docs to create and edit documents. Google Docs now has the ability to save a document in Microsoft Word format and to edit a document that was created in Microsoft Word format. In addition, Microsoft provides a free online version of Microsoft Word so a Chromebook connected to the internet can use the online Micosoft Word to edit documents. It is my impression that all of these alternatives to the FULL version of Microsoft Word have very simplified formatting options. So, the simple versions are fine for note taking or writing a letter, but they are not designed for a complex document such as a legal brief or a document with footnotes. It is NOT possible to install the full version of Microsoft Word on a Chromebook. There are $200 Windows 10 laptops from Lenovo that can handle the full version of Microsoft Office and some of them are sold with a free one year license to Microsoft Office, a license worth $70, reducing the net cost of the laptop to about $130.
