It seems to work fine with USB-C connected external disk drives, so that should be fine if using data disks. Keep in mind that this is a Chromebook, so video playback options will be somewhat rudimentary. I don't know if software is available for DVD or BD playback on Chrome OS, so you might want to research that to understand the options before considering a Chromebook for that use.
