There're no moving parts but it does get quite warm if you obstruct the vents on the bottom. Using only the battery the i7 model is ridiculously fast for a laptop and very battery efficient. The i5 version would probably have better battery and thermal management since it's effectively slower. But the i7 easily goes 8 to 10 hours on a charge! (More if you manage it right.) As far as which to buy? It depends on your needs. If you buy the i5 you could always add a faster (and bigger) SSD to take away some latency. But I for one am glad I bought the i7 instead of the i5.
