• The J-7 I purchased at Best Buy was plastic and not metal. Perhaps the picture you were viewing was of a different version? I'm very happy with my phone thus far.

• Yes, this is the 2017 model. You can tell from the back where the camera flash is located to the right of the camera lens. The 2018 2nd Gen model has the flash directly below the camera lens. Be mindful when purchasing a case for it.
