I think that it means you buy minutes and use a carrier like cricket at Walmart . I do not know if there are differences in the phone other than no contract and you pay as you go. I would put the 2 side by side to see if there is a difference in the quality but if you want full service you do not buy the prepay. If you are limited on income it may be better choice and you do not pay that monthly fee but you lose a lot as well so compare the 2 phones and if you can afford the monthly bill, I suggest buying the normal J7
